MARINE PROTECTED AREAS

Know the zones. Protect the sea. Fish for the future.

Before you cast your line… Mauritius is surrounded by some of the most important marine ecosystems in the Indian Ocean. To protect these ecosystems and allow marine life to recover, certain areas have been designated as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). 🌊 So, what exactly is an MPA? A Marine Protected Area (MPA) is an area of the ocean or coast that is specially designated and managed to protect marine and coastal biodiversity, ecosystems and/or marine resources. MPAs can be found in coastal waters as well as open oceans around the world. The level of protection and activities allowed can vary depending on the area. Why do MPAs matter? Inside well-managed marine protected areas, marine life has a better chance to thrive. These areas can support more animals and plants, greater diversity of species and larger individuals. Together, these benefits contribute to healthier ecosystems, more productive marine environments and stronger food webs. For the fishing community, protecting certain areas isn't only about protecting today's sea, it's also about maintaining marine resources for tomorrow.

BLUE BAY MARINE PARK- One of Mauritius' most remarkable marine ecosystems, located in the southeast of Mauritius, Blue Bay Marine Park is known for its rich coral ecosystem and diverse marine life. Its patch reef is particularly spectacular, with luxuriant coral growth that supports a wide variety of marine organisms. 🪸 CORAL GARDEN is one of the park's most remarkable features. Its exceptional coral growth creates habitat for numerous marine species and makes the area an important part of the marine ecosystem

🎣 ENTERING AN MPA DOESN'T MEAN EVERY ACTIVITY IS ALLOWED. PERMITS IN MARINE PARKS & FISHING RESERVES .Rules can vary depending on the zone and the type of activity. Certain activities within marine parks and fishing reserves may require specific permits or authorisations. These rules help regulate activities within protected areas and support the conservation and management of marine resources.
